A University of Michigan scholar from China accused of smuggling biological material into the United States and lying to federal agents is expected to plead guilty soon, according to a federal court filing Thursday.

Prosecutors filed a criminal information against Yunqing Jian, 33, charging her with smuggling, conspiracy to commit smuggling and lying to federal agents and, if convicted, she faces up to 20 years in federal prison. A criminal information is a type of charge that indicates a guilty plea is expected.
