Portland's volleyball program is off to solid start with a 13-5-1 record, which includes a significant CAAC White win over area power Lakewood in four sets.
Portland is loaded with contributors and strong leadership with 11 of the 13 players on roster being seniors. But at the center of it, quite literally, is senior middle blocker/hitter McKenna Boykin, who was voted the latest LSJ high school girls athlete of of the week.
Boykin was a big factor in the Raiders win over Lakewood and last week set the career record for blocks by breaking the record of 181 set by Sydney VanMunster. She entered this week's four-set win over Lakewood with 183 for her career. During a match against Lansing Catholic last season Boykin set the school record for most blocks in a single set.
