The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has partnered with the Monroe Community Mental Health Authority to bring a proactive approach to first responders' interactions with individuals with conditions like autism, Alzheimer's, and PTSD.
Sheriff Troy Goodnough said he was inspired to create the SAFE program because he frequently heard examples of negative police interactions with people of different abilities. The SAFE program, he said, allows family members to enroll loved ones so first responders are aware of conditions. They will be given a decal that can go on their car or in their home, so when emergency first responders engage with them, they will know what they can expect.
