Prime Minister Mark Carney has officially named David Lametti as Canada's next ambassador to the United Nations.
"Canada's new government has a mandate to strengthen and diversify our international partnerships, relying on principled and effective leaders to represent the value of Canada's strength in a rapidly transforming world," Carney said in a statement announcing the appointment on Thursday.
CBC News first broke the story on Wednesday that the former justice minister was leaving the Prime Minister's Office and being considered for a diplomatic role.
The former Liberal MP had been justice minister under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau from 2019 to 2023. He resigned from Parliament in 2024.
