TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - All week long, WCTV has turned back the clock, celebrating 70 years of bringing North Florida and South Georgia important and informative newscasts.
But when Channel Six went on the air in 1955, the channel wasn’t just for news. Broadcasts back then often featured live music and other entertainment.
Dr. Peggy Venable is a member of the Lower Muscogee Creek Tribe in Whigam, Ga. Back in the 1950s, she was known as Peggy O’Neal, a singer who traveled with pioneering country music singer Neal “Pappy” McCormick.
McCormick was known for his revolutionary steel guitar and could play country, jazz, gospel and even Hawaiian.
“With his guitar, he could play anything,” Venable recalls.
She told WCTV the group was “wintering” in Panama City, taking a gig at Channel Seve
