A preliminary magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Russia this morning, but weather officials have not yet determined if it poses a tsunami threat to Hawaii.

The major temblor struck 90.3 miles east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka, Russia, at 8:58 a.m. Hawaii time at a depth of 6.2 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said a tsunami threat exists for parts of the Pacific closer to the earthquake, but it is too early to determine whether Hawaii is at risk. If a threat to Hawaii does develop, the earliest the hazard could begin is 2:55 p.m. today

A tsunami advisory is in effect for Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. However, there is no threat to Guam.
