MEXICO CITY — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is prioritizing discussions on short-term work visas and the expansion of ocean trade routes between Canada and Mexico during her meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney. Carney arrived in Mexico City today to engage in talks with Sheinbaum as both leaders address global trade challenges influenced by U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies.

In a morning news conference before Carney's arrival, Sheinbaum emphasized the desire of all three countries involved in the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement to strengthen the trade pact. She noted that Carney's visit presents a valuable opportunity to enhance the bilateral relationship between Canada and Mexico.

Sheinbaum proposed the expansion of special work visas for Mexicans seeking employment in Canada, mentioning that Canada is already considering this initiative. Additionally, the leaders plan to discuss strategies to boost trade between Mexico and Canada through ports located on both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.

During Carney's visit, the two leaders are expected to sign a strategic partnership agreement, further solidifying their commitment to collaboration in trade and labor.
