ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The Winnebago County Coroner's Office has identified a man who drowned in the Rock River in downtown Rockford on Monday.

According to the Rockford Fire Department, crews were called to the area behind the Rockford Public Library, near the E. State Street Bridge, around 10:16 a.m.

They arrived to find a man attempting to rescue a person who had submerged in the water near the shoreline.

Nearly two hours later, divers were able to recover the body of Anthony Brooks, 51.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:20 p.m.

Authorities said they are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Brooks' death.
