BOSTON — Injured Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu (left oblique strain) will not fly with the team to Tampa Bay on Thursday night.

He will remain in Boston for a workout at Fenway Park on Friday. If all goes well, he would then fly to Tampa to be activated from the injured list Saturday or Sunday.

“Tomorrow he’s going to have a workout. He’s going to run the bases. He’s feeling a lot better,” manager Alex Cora said before Boston’s game against the Athletics on Thursday. “Just talked to him in the weight room. If everything goes well, he’ll fly to Tampa and then we’ll decide when he’ll be active.”

Why stay here instead of work out Friday in Tampa?

“Because that’s what we decided,” Cora said.
