WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Food and Drug Administration proposed Wednesday to revoke authorization on Orange B food dye, a petroleum-based dye the FDA says hasn’t been produced since 1978.
The agency also emphasized its intent to remove all petroleum-based dyes from the food industry.
“The FDA also recently included the six remaining petroleum-based dyes frequently used in the food supply—FD&C Green No. 3, FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Yellow No. 5, FD&C Yellow No. 6, FD&C Blue No. 1, and FD&C Blue No. 2 – on its list of select chemicals under FDA review ,” the FDA said in a press release.
The FDA will review public comments for 30 days before making a final vote.
