The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office issued an alert Thursday after receiving reports from family members of jail detainees regarding a phone scam.

Information about those detained at Tulsa County jail is publicly available online, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Casey Roebuck pointed out in a news release. She said scammers use that information to look up family members they can target for a phone scam.

"This week the Tulsa County jail has received dozens of calls from potential victims who say someone claiming to be a bondsman wants to be paid over the phone to get their loved out of jail," the release states.

The Sheriff's Office urges anyone who receives such a phone call to hang up.
