After two years of discussion, Helena has “finally” adopted a clean energy loan program approved by Montana in 2021.

“It has been a long time coming,” City Commissioner Emily Dean said Sept. 8.

C-PACE, standing for commercial property-assessed capital enhancements, offers a loan for energy efficiency improvements that is paid off in property taxes for 20 or more years.

Think HVAC improvements, solar panels or new elevators, its website states. It can also go toward public safety improvements, like adding fire and flooding resistance.

The program focuses on commercial, industrial, agricultural, apartment and mixed-use buildings.
