Fort Worth Police are doubling down on their efforts to help young children who witness violent crimes. The department’s 911 dispatchers are now asking callers if children are at the scene and reminding officers to make a “Handle with Care” notification.

“Nine times out of 10, there’s going to be a child somewhere,” Fort Worth Police Commander Antoine Williams said.

Beyond making arrests, collecting evidence and conducting interviews, Fort Worth Police also look for the most vulnerable witnesses while responding to violent calls for shootings, assaults and domestic violence.

“I always try to tell the officers, ‘Take time, I know the scene is hectic. Clear it, have that assist officer go and get down on one knee and talk to that kid,'” Williams said.
