ARLINGTON, Va. -- Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin said he hasn't decided whether 2025-26 will be his final NHL season.

"I don't know if this is going to be the last. We'll see," Ovechkin said Thursday at the start of Capitals training camp.

Ovechkin, 40, became the NHL's leading career goal scorer last season, passing Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky (894) and finishing with 897 career goals.

The Capitals captain eased concerns that he was slowing down with 44 goals in a season that saw him miss 16 games with a broken leg. He is an unrestricted free agent after this season, his 21st in the league.

Ovechkin said he has yet to discuss his future with general manager Chris Patrick and president of hockey operations Brian MacLellan.
