So, you can understand why roo rescuer Chris "Brolga" Barns, who sees life in roadkill pouches, struggles with kangaroo culling programs like those in place in Australia's eastern states and the ACT.
"I don't like it because I love kangaroos," he says.
As founder of the Alice Springs Kangaroo Sanctuary, Barns' escapades raising joeys featured in the 2013 BBC-National Geographic documentary series Kangaroo Dundee and inspired the new movie Kangaroo .
