NORTH CHARLESTON — It was May 22, 2021.

As the sun went down, Ronjanae Smith, 14, celebrated another school year coming to a close by attending a community cookout and concert in her tight-knit Deas Hill neighborhood.

She couldn’t have known that she would be ensnared in the crossfire of a shooting authorities believe was gang-related; that the unlit, grassy field would erupt in chaos as gunshots ripped through the crowd of teenagers; nor that she would not live to complete another grade.
