ARLINGTON, Va. -- Alex Ovechkin hasn’t decided if this will be his final NHL season, yet.

In fact, the Washington Capitals captain, and the NHL record-holder with 897 goals, doesn’t sound in a hurry to make that decision either.

“I don’t know. Do you know?” Ovechkin said after the first practice of training camp Thursday. “I don’t know if this is going to be the last or if [not]. We’ll see.”

Ovechkin, who turned 40 on Wednesday, is beginning his 21st NHL season, all with Washington, and the final season of the five-year, $47.5 million contract ($9.5 million average annual value) he signed July 27, 2021. The left wing said he hasn’t talked about his future yet with Capitals owner Ted Leonsis or general manager Chris Patrick and seems content to take his time with that.
