WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Jalapeño chips, lemonade, a sprinkle cookie and a cupcake. In the hour or so we spent with him, 3-year-old Nathan Sheridan ate it all. With a refined palette like that, is it any surprise his mom's in the restaurant business?

Kara Sheridan owns The Corner House in Warwick — and The Shanty just down the road.

Even stronger than Nathan's love of treats is the staff's love for him and his mom. So last spring, when what started out as a flu that wouldn't go away became a trip to the hospital and a devastating diagnosis, the staff stepped up.

"By the time I was 11, I had lost both my parents to cancer," Sheridan said, "so I think it was like for me, 'Oh my God, please. This cannot be happening.'"
