SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

California Democrats in Congress Thursday unveiled a proposal that would prohibit states from redrawing their Congressional maps mid-decade and require all states to establish nonpartisan redistricting commissions.

It comes as a similar proposal written by a Republican has stalled in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The latest proposal filed by U.S. Senator Alex Padilla, D-California, comes as states across the country have jumped into a redistricting fight between Republicans and Democrats. Texas originally began the push and passed new maps for Republicans at the request of President Donald Trump. California then countered with a map that could further favor Democrats and void Texas' gains if voters approve those maps in a special election in November.
