At the age of 66, Jack Beros was given a devastating diagnosis of mesothelioma from asbestos exposure, but his final years brought an unexpected "gift" to his daughter Casey.
The mother of two young girls uprooted her family from Sydney to Perth to care for her dad , and soon cherished in the "beauty" of being around her family again.
But in the upheaval, she realised there was little advice for those smooshed into the sandwich generation (caring for older loved ones while still raising a family).
It prompted the health journalist to document everything and interview her dad many times, with the result being her new book, Next of Kin. She said it's a mix of memoir, practical guide for carers, how to self-care, tough conversations, grief and even "legal logistics".
