Paul Skenes usually serves up splinkers and 100 mph fastballs to major league hitters. This time, Skenes served up something different.
On Thursday, Skenes joined representatives from the Gary Sinise Foundation to serve lunch to a group of volunteer firefighters in Monroeville. Skenes met with Monroeville Volunteer Fire Company No. 5, spoke with the first responders and scooped baked beans.
It was part of Skenes’ pledge to give back. Skenes, the Pirates’ Roberto Clemente Award nominee for philanthropy and community service, has raised more than $100,000 for the Gary Sinise Foundation, which serves wounded veterans. The Pirates ace has also supported numerous other causes.
For Skenes, given his background, it’s important to him to use his platform for good.
