DULUTH — While the sun was hidden for much of Thursday, it didn’t keep people from enjoying the outdoors.

Even with some rain and wind gusts around 30 mph, the mouth of the Lester River on Lake Superior was a popular place to try and catch waves, catch fish and catch your breath.

University of Minnesota Duluth student Luke Pittelko couldn’t resist fitting in some surfing ahead of his 2 p.m. class. Pittelko grew up in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, and plans to graduate in May. The waves aren’t quite as big on central Minnesota lakes, so he’s been stoked to have the opportunities to surf year-round in Duluth.

“I started my freshman year on the lake, but I’ve surfed on family vacations and stuff before, too, " said Pittelko. “It's really fun. I love it out there.”
