Melnyk was responding to a motion that was brought forward in 2019. The motion was for the city to consider whether to impose further prohibitions on all smoking and vaping in all workplaces, including all outdoor spaces at all workplaces.

“An online survey was conducted in 2019 with a very minimal number of respondents (43 total), of which only five supported the added restrictions and half were strongly opposed to any further restrictions,” according to a city report signed by Melnyk.
