WASHINGTON D.C., DC — A Congressional hearing intended to address what Republicans have deemed 'D.C.'s crime crisis' was overshadowed by issues unrelated to public safety in the nation's capital.

The six-hour-long hearing conducted by the House Oversight Committee on the heels of the Trump administration's federal surge included some heated exchanges involving D.C.'s top officials.

Rep. Nancy Mace announced she was introducing a bill targeting diversity, equity, and inclusion policies in the District. At one point, the Republican Congresswoman for South Carolina asked D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, “So, Mayor Bowser, what is a woman?”

Bowser replied, “I’m a woman. Are you a woman?”

Mace continued her line of questioning, calling Bowser "slick."
