A shelter in place was issued Thusrday, Sept. 18 at the University of North Carolina Wilmington following reports of an unconfirmed gunman.

As of 7:30 p.m., UNCW police were investigating reports of an unconfirmed gunman on campus, according to a notification sent via the university's alert system. When reached by phone just after the alert was sent, a UNCW police officer said that they could not provide any further information but confirmed the shelter in place.

The shelter in place follows rising conflict and threats stemming from the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Shortly after the university hosted a vigil for Kirk on Sept. 15, videos of students painting over a memorial began circulating across social media.
