OPELIKA, Ala. (WTVM) - An Opelika sign indicating the city is the hometown of former Miss America Mallory Hagan has been removed following a petition circulating.

The signs sparked controversy after Hagan posted a video making what many are calling “insensitive” comments about the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Mayor Gary Fuller said the signs have been up for years and were outdated as Hagan now lives in New York, and they have been taken down. According to him, they reserve the right to have whatever signs put up, but they want to make sure those signs represent Opelika’s values.

Hagan was crowned Miss America in 2013. At the time, she was Miss New York, but she spent her childhood in Opelika, graduating from Opelika High School.
