LINCOLN, Neb. —
The U.S. Department of Justice has issued a letter to the Nebraska Secretary of State requesting voter data — including personally identifiable information — as part of a nationwide effort to ensure compliance with federal voting laws.
Nebraska is among more than 30 states that have received the request, which some local advocacy groups believe goes too far.
“They’re also asking for personally identifiable information of Nebraska voters,” said Secretary of State Bob Evnen.
According to Evnen, the DOJ is asking for full driver’s license numbers, exact dates of birth, and the last four digits of Social Security numbers, on top of the state's voter list.
