HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — Scammers will do anything to get your money or personal information.

A popular scam that has been making the rounds involves a text message from an unknown number, and an expert explains why it’s more harmful to answer the text than to just hit delete.

You may have gotten text messages that look like this: "Hello Ella! Miss you!" or "Come to my house for dinner tomorrow," and, "Are you free for tomorrow afternoon for a call?"

They're texts that, at first glance, seem like the sender just got the number wrong. But experts say they're scammers hoping you'll respond.
