CINCINNATI -- Hunter Greene took a no-hitter two outs into the seventh before settling for a one-hit, complete-game shutout in a 1-0 Reds win over the Cubs on Thursday night at Great American Ball Park.
Greene needed just 69 pitches to hold the Cubs hitless through six innings before Seiya Suzuki grounded a clean two-out double down the left-field line, a hit that just scooted under the glove of rookie third baseman Sal Stewart.
While the Cubs played their first game since clinching a playoff spot on Wednesday in Pittsburgh, the Reds are desperately trying to stay alive in the race for the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League .
The Reds (77-76) remain two games behind the New York Mets (79-74), who beat San Diego, 6-1, earlier Thursday afternoon.
