COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) - The buyout in Texas A&M athletic director Trev Alberts’ contract, should Alberts decide to leave his post before the end of the contract in 2029, will reduce by 50% upon the resignation of university president Mark Welsh, according to the contract obtained by KBTX via open records request.

The A&M University System announced Welsh will step down from his role Friday at 5 p.m. after nearly two weeks of some conservative Texans calling for the president’s firing due to a video that went viral of a disagreement that led to a professors firing .

Should Alberts elect to leave his position prior to April 1, 2026, his contract stipulates he would owe the university $4 million. The buyout reduces $1 million each year of his contract.
