A Broken Hill man has completed the equivalent of 27 marathons in 29 days to raise funds and awareness for a rare condition known as Angelman syndrome.
Mitch McKenny – also known as "Marathon Mitch" – left Broken Hill on August 22 and ran 1,132 kilometres to arrive at Newcastle's Nobbys Beach on Friday.
He was inspired to do the run when the son of his close friends, Jess and Bree Maguire, was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome at four months old.
"My wife and I wanted to be able to help [baby Huxley] and we put our heads together and this is what we came up with," Mr McKenny said.
"I'm not a professional runner … I think we just came up with the idea that it had to be quite a lofty goal to symbolise the life that the Angelman kids and their families are going through every day."
