The Pennsylvania Turnpike’s open-road tolling system (ORT), which is being implemented through January 2027, will eventually allow the Commonwealth’s toll roads to function like regular highways. It will also allow for space-saving interchange configurations, like the one planned for State Route 130 in Penn Township, Westmoreland County.
By the end of 2026, the 85-year-old toll-booth system on the nation’s oldest modern highway, as well as other PTC properties such as the Beaver Valley Expressway and the Northeast Extension, is expected to have been completely replaced with open-road tolling.
