Every Major League Baseball team craves depth, and on Thursday, the Atlanta Braves were able to snake some from a National League rival.
The San Francisco Giants, still battling for an unlikely spot in the playoffs, designated utility man Brett Wisely for assignment on Monday to make room for top prospect Bryce Eldridge on the 40-man roster.
While Eldridge was clearly a bigger part of the Giants' long-term plans, San Francisco presumably wanted to keep Wisely in the organization, too. But the Braves swooped in and took him.
On Thursday, the Braves announced that they had claimed Wisely off waivers and optioned him to Triple-A Gwinnett. Atlanta moved left-handed pitcher Aaron Bummer to the 60-day injured list to make room on its own 40-man roster.
