A school that suspended more than 200 pupils within approximately three weeks has declared its strict stance on behaviour 'is working' following an encouraging visit from Ofsted inspectors.

Management at St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic Academy in Whiston has implemented radical measures to "raise the bar" regarding expectations for its students.

Senior staff explained they had concluded that if the school was to progress beyond its current Ofsted grade of 'requires improvement', then significant reforms were essential to tackle behavioural problems amongst pupils.

A series of fresh disciplinary measures would result in students being suspended and sent home if they persistently failed to comply with reasonable requests from teachers.
