BARRY COUNTY, MI – Sheriff’s deputies identified Richard Martin, 60, as the man who drowned while swimming in Leach Lake in Barry County’s Carlton Township.

Rescuers responded just after 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, to a report that a man who had been swimming from his pontoon boat was unresponsive and underwater.

Sheriff’s deputies pulled the victim from the water using a lake resident’s pontoon boat and began CPR before he was taken to Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital, where he died Friday morning.

The sheriff’s Marine Division, Hastings police and firefighters, and Life EMS assisted deputies at the scene.
