Almost 10 years after a toddler collapsed and died from a head injury, the highly anticipated trial of his babysitter has begun in a London courtroom.

Meggin Van Hoof, 46, of Strathroy, pleaded not guilty this week to manslaughter in the death of 15-month-old Nathaniel McLellan, who died in hospital on Oct. 31, 2015.

In the decade since his death, the case has been the subject of a lengthy police investigation, two civil actions, a media investigation and a podcast before finally making its way before Superior Court Justice Michael Carnegie.

The trial originally was to be heard before a jury, but earlier this year it became a judge-alone trial.
