MACOMB (WGEM) -The Al Sears Music Fest is happening this weekend in Macomb.

The music fest honors Al Sears, a jazz saxophonist from downstate Illinois.

Sears began pursuing music as a teenager, and joined the broadway musical “Shuffling Along.”

He joined and performed in various orchestras such as Zack Whyte’s and Duke Ellington’s, and joined the Johnny Hodges’ band and composed the hit “Castle Rock.”

Sears also founded Sylvia Music Company, named after his daughter, which supported Black musician’s rights to publishing royalties.

The fest will begin on Friday evening at the American Legion, with a WIU Jazz Symphony Orchestra performance.

Live music performances and other events will take place all day Saturday and Sunday at the Western Illinois Museum, which will tribute Al Sears. P
