Earlier this month, President Donald Trump focused his ire on Portland and suggested National Guard troops may storm the city.

Likening Portland to “living in hell,” Trump said protesters had ruined the city, seemingly alluding to reports of demonstrations near the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Building.

But Portland police crime figures tell a different story. The city has continued to see declines in major categories of violent crime after record-breaking violence in 2021 and 2022.

The most noticeable declines have come in homicides and recorded shootings.

Police data show Portland recorded 25 killings from January to August this year, a decline of nearly 52% from 2024. The city recorded 386 shootings in the same period , a 33% decrease from last year.
