One of Sydney Harbour's iconic swimming spots is facing delays in getting its shark nets up and running due to recent storm damage.

Shark Beach at Nielsen Park in the city's east is seasonally netted with an enclosure to protect swimmers from sharks during Sydney's warmer months.

"The Nielsen Park swimming enclosure nets are typically installed in time for the October school holidays or when the water reaches 22 degrees Celsius," a National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) spokesperson said.

This winter saw above average rainfall, strong winds and large swells which caused erosion.

NPWS said a recent storm in August had damaged a pylon used to secure the nets at the beach.
