WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — West Haven named their Hispanic American of the Year.

Latino journalist Abelardo King was chosen to have the honor this year.

King, a native of the Dominican Republic, moved to Connecticut in 1992. He helped launch "La Voz Hispana de Connecticut," the state's largest Spanish-language newspaper and a vital source for Spanish-speaking communities in the state.

Your devotion to lifting up the Hispanic American community you love symbolizes everything good about our city," West Haven Mayor Dorinda Borer (D) said. "You represent American ideals that anyone from anywhere can write our next great chapter and that if we work together, there is no dream that we cannot achieve together."

Borer also announced that Friday is officially Abelardo King Day.
