The New Mexico Department of Health said three counties in the state are reporting a spike in overdose deaths and ER visits.

According to officials, the majority of the deaths were linked to fentanyl. Data from July to September 2025, compared to this same time last year, shows an increase in overdose deaths in three counties: Rio Arriba County by 48%, Santa Fe County by 104% and Taos County by 340%. Overdose ER visits have also increased: 81% in Rio Arriba County, 131% in Santa Fe County, and 206% in Taos County.

David Daniels, the harm reduction section manager for the health department, said the powder they've tested from these counties shows a higher dosage of fentanyl in them.
