Three shops have been significantly damaged by fire in Richmond, in inner Melbourne.

The blaze broke out in a pie shop on Burnley Street about 5am on Saturday.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) said crews battled to contain the fire which had spread into a shared roof line and into neighbouring shops.

It took almost an hour to bring under control.

A FRV spokesperson said crews would remain in Burnley Street until late Saturday morning to look for hotspots within the structure.

The cause of the fire was being investigated.

Police and paramedics were on scene during the blaze to help firefighters.
