DeLAND, Fla. – A DeLand resident fatally shot a bear on Friday morning after it wandered into the person’s home, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

In a release, FWC officials told News 6 that no one else was injured during the incident, and investigators found damage to the house’s outside doors that was “consistent with entry by a bear.”

Following the incident, FWC officials explained they would monitor the area for any other concerning bear activity.

“As fall approaches, bears are in search of more food to increase their fat reserves for winter,” the release reads. “Secure attractants such as food, garbage, bird feeders, or grills, and lock external doors at night.”
