DES MOINES, Iowa — An immigrant rights group is raising concerns over a new initiative by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to potentially secure office space in Des Moines.

Federal records indicate that the government is seeking office space to support law enforcement operations, accommodating up to 70 workers. According to The Washington Post, these spaces are intended for ICE.

The immigrant rights group, Escucha Mi Voz, is concerned that this could lead to an unofficial detention facility.

"We've seen all over the country where these processing centers are holding people for longer periods of time because there is an overflow of people who are being detained," said Getsy Hernandez, an organizer with Escucha Mi Voz Iowa.
