A sore throat is among the symptoms of the new strain

A fresh Covid-19 variant is spreading throughout the UK, rapidly establishing itself as the most prevalent strain in recent days.

During the seven-day period leading up to September 3, there were 1,541 cases documented across England, based on the most recent UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) figures.

This represents a 7.1 per cent rise week-on-week, particularly for infections of the Stratus (XFG) variant.

Stratus remains a "variant under monitoring," according to the World Health Organization, although it isn't believed to cause more serious illness.
