Hordes of enormous spiders will descend upon British households during the festive period, creating a decidedly unpleasant 'crittermas' for millions.

People will witness a surge in eight-legged creatures and might even discover one "under the Christmas tree", insect expert Dee Patel has cautioned.

The balmy summer means these creepy crawlies have been gorging on an abundant supply of grubs over recent months, which has enhanced their breeding season.

Entomologist Mr Patel, from Winterton, Lincolnshire, explained: "The females are in our homes all year round, the males are the ones which are coming in now and are looking for love. They just want to start a family.
