A man driving a burning apartment building for senior citizens in Southeast D.C. stopped and heroically ran inside, helping rescue a bedridden resident.

Zackary Battle was driving near the 2700 block of Jasper Street SE Friday morning when he saw the smoke.

“As I'm turning the corner right here, I see smoke coming out of the building,” he said.

D.C. Fire and EMS was close, but Battle was closer.

“I ain't wasting no time, because I know there was people still in there, so I ran up to the third floor,” he said.

He heard someone yelling for help getting his bedridden wife to safety.

"I heard a guy, you know. He was calling and he said, 'I need help. My wife. My wife is stuck. My wife bedridden; she's stuck. I need help
