TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Congress is considering a new bill to cut funding for Title I schools , which are schools serving a high proportion of low-income students.

Of the roughly 300 schools in Pima County, more than two-thirds receive Title I funding.

The Tucson Unified School District estimated the cuts could cost it roughly $7 million, but the district said it’s not prepared to comment.

This particular funding proposal was passed by the House of Representatives earlier this month, and if approved, it would decrease funding for programs like English Language Learning by 27% .

In the Flowing Wells School District, where all but two schools receive Title I funding, the funding cut could impact the reading intervention program for students who need extra help.
