UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Benedictine Bengals had been without a touchdown all game, and with just under five minutes to play, they had the ball, fourth-and-1, on the Lake Catholic Cougars’ 5-yard line.

The good news for the Bengals was that they converted the first down. The bad news … tight end Sean O’Connell fumbled the football after he did, and it was picked up by Lake Catholic on their own 1.

Lake Catholic ran out the clock after that, securing an old-fashioned, gritty 6-3 victory over Benedictine on the campus of John Carroll University.

Lake Catholic, ranked No. 23 in this week’s cleveland.com top 25, improves to 4-1, while Benedictine, ranked No. 18, falls to 4-1 after a tragic loss.
