The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has requested the Mumbai Police to take legal action against actor Ranbir Kapoor, the producers of the web series 'The Ba***ds of Bollywood', and Netflix. This follows a complaint alleging that Kapoor was shown using an e-cigarette in the series without any health warning or disclaimer, violating the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019.

The complaint, filed by Vinay Joshi, highlighted that the scene in question glamorizes vaping, potentially influencing young viewers negatively. The NHRC has issued notices to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, urging it to take necessary steps to prevent such content from being aired on streaming platforms. The commission emphasized the need to protect impressionable audiences, particularly the youth, from harmful portrayals.

In addition, the NHRC has directed the Mumbai Police Commissioner to investigate the identities and operations of e-cigarette manufacturers and importers. The police have been instructed to submit a detailed report within two weeks.

'Ba***ds of Bollywood', directed by Aryan Khan, premiered on Netflix on September 18. The series features a cast that includes Lakshya, Raghav Juyal, and Anya Singh, with Ranbir Kapoor appearing in a cameo role in the seventh episode. In this scene, he is depicted asking for a vape from a character played by Anya Singh.

The Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019, strictly bans the production, sale, and advertisement of e-cigarettes in India to safeguard public health. Violations of this law can lead to imprisonment and fines. Despite these regulations, e-cigarettes remain accessible in various outlets, raising concerns about compliance and enforcement.

As of now, there has been no official response from Ranbir Kapoor, the production team, or Netflix regarding the NHRC's actions.
